In 2022, a refurbishment project began. Croixmariebourdon architectes associés led the redesign. Thomas Bourdon and Nicolas Croixmarie were the lead architects. They aimed to highlight the original quality. They wanted comfortable and energy-efficient use. The project refreshed the school’s urban identity. It ensured the building met modern standards.
The architects thoroughly studied the existing building. They conducted diagnostics and user interviews. This helped them design a new envelope. The envelope addressed faults and reinforced the school’s quality. They used a bioclimatic approach. This involved resizing and protecting the glass surfaces. New perforated cladding filters sunlight. A unifying gallery connects the wings.
The gallery features a golden wood section. Above, a bright metal roof reflects the sky. At the street entrance, it creates a protected reception area. This links the school to the local area. The design allows for easy implementation. It offers passive protection. It creates new learning spaces.
The refurbishment uses a limited range of materials. This simplifies and refreshes the school’s design. The external walls gained extra insulation. The facades feature perforated metal cladding. This matches the existing zinc roofing. The removable envelope combines solid parts and glass. It forms sun protection. The exterior features grey aluminum joinery. The windows are sun-controlled.
Inside, the gallery has a vibrant colonnade in white steel. European larch planks clad the facades and roof. These planks provide a golden shade. The interior refurbishment retained existing structures. Work on the surrounding area increased greenery. Many materials were reused such as paving and existing plants. Old trees were repurposed into furniture.
