In 1948, a vision took shape. The cityscape of Marseille’s Vieux Port, scarred by the devastation of World War II, was reimagined by architect André Leconte. Central to his plan was Rue Henri Tasso. It was designed as a symbolic pathway. It offered a clear sightline from Place de Lenche to the majestic Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde basilica, a beacon of hope rising above the city. Rue Henri Tasso isn’t just a street. It is a testament to Marseille’s resilience. The street is named after Henri Tasso, a prominent figure in Marseille’s history. He served as mayor from 1935 to 1939 and later as Minister of Merchant Marine. Tasso’s legacy is intertwined with the city’s reconstruction. As you walk along Rue Henri Tasso, you’ll notice the unique design. Two sections are open to traffic, interspersed with two sets of stairs. This design adds to the street’s distinctive character. It also reflects the hilly terrain of the area. At the top of Rue Henri Tasso, buildings designed by architect Jean Crozet flank the street. Look closely at their facades. They feature a beautiful rose-colored cladding made of washed gravel. These buildings, along with the street itself, represent a new chapter in Marseille’s history, a phoenix rising from the ashes of war. Rue Henri Tasso, with its view of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde, is a symbol of rebirth. It is a reminder of how Marseille transformed destruction into an opportunity to create something beautiful and enduring.
