The Place Dauphine, a name that evokes history and grandeur, is just ahead. It’s an enchanting square, built in the 17th century by Henry IV, named for his son, the Dauphin of France and future Louis XIII. The square is a triangle, its pointed end facing the Pont Neuf, the bridge that connects the left and right banks of the Seine. And there, at the meeting of the bridge and the square, lies the Rue Henri-Robert. It’s a short, charming street, named in honor of the celebrated lawyer Henri-Robert, in 1948. The street is a little-known gem, tucked away between the stately buildings of the Place Dauphine and the Pont Neuf’s bustling traffic. At number 28, you can still see a plaque commemorating André Antoine, the actor and founder of the Théâtre-Libre, who lived there from 1912 to 1934. Look closely at the surrounding buildings, you can see small passages on the ground floor. They are called ” passages couverts,” covered passages that lead into courtyards. As you walk down the Rue Henri-Robert, remember that this seemingly quiet street once witnessed the grandeur of the French monarchy. It’s a reminder of the rich tapestry of Parisian history waiting to be discovered.
