Hidden behind a discreet facade Rue Grobon whispers tales of Lyon’s past. This short street in the Saint-Vincent quarter boasts a history richer than its length suggests. It connects Rue des Augustins to Rue d’Algerie. Its quiet charm hides a fascinating story of art legacy and monastic origins.

Rue Grobon wasn’t always Rue Grobon. For centuries it was known as Rue Sainte-Monique. This name honored Saint Monica mother of Saint Augustine. Hermits of Saint Augustine settled in Lyon in the early 14th century. They established a presence near the present-day Rue Grobon. In 1672 they opened Rue Sainte-Monique. A stone at the corner still bears both names a testament to the street’s dual identity.

The current name Rue Grobon pays tribute to Jean-Michel Grobon a Lyon-born painter and engraver. He was renowned for his landscapes. His works depict Lyon and its surroundings. A generous bequest of his paintings and drawings by Benoite Rivoire led to the renaming. The city council accepted the gift in 1890. They decided to honor the artist by renaming Rue Sainte-Monique. The change became official in 1892. Grobon’s artistic legacy lives on in the name of this unassuming street.

Rue Grobon is more than just a thoroughfare. It’s a living link to Lyon’s artistic and monastic heritage. A brief stroll allows you to traverse centuries of history. You can almost feel the presence of the Augustinian hermits. Imagine the vibrant colors of Grobon’s paintings echoing in the quiet houses that line the street. Each building holds silent witness to the passage of time. Each brick a small piece of Lyon’s rich and complex tapestry.
