“A metal whisper, a forgotten echo.” That’s how I would describe Rue Griset. This quiet street, tucked away in the 11th arrondissement of Paris, holds a secret history of metal and innovation. Rue Griset wasn’t always a tranquil backwater. It was once the heart of a metalworking empire. In 1760, Antoine Griset established a foundry in the Marais. His grandson, also named Antoine, moved the operation to Rue Oberkampf in 1825. This move laid the foundation for what would become Rue Griset. The Griset foundry specialized in precious metals, even producing the platinum bar used for the standard meter, now displayed at the Musée des Arts et Métiers. The family’s innovation continued through the generations. By the mid-19th century, they had seventeen steam-powered rolling mills. Jules Griset, Antoine’s grandson, won a gold medal at the 1878 World’s Fair. His factory became the first to roll aluminum. Rue Griset, then, was a hive of activity, a testament to the Griset family’s ingenuity. The company even employed 150 people at its peak. However, the bustling factory eventually outgrew its location. It relocated to Aubervilliers in 1919-1920. Today, Rue Griset exists as a quiet cul-de-sac off Rue Oberkampf. The original brick buildings remain, silent witnesses to the echoes of industry. They have been renovated into beautiful lofts. The Institut d’Études Supérieures des Arts now occupies number 1, adding a new layer of artistic expression to this historically industrial street. So, next time you find yourself on Rue Griset, take a moment to listen. You might just hear the whispers of metal and the echoes of a forgotten empire.
