Nestled in Paris lies Rue Giroux. It’s a name tied to artistry and innovation. It makes you wonder how many know the story behind it.

The story begins with François-Simon-Alphonse Giroux. He established Maison Alphonse Giroux in 1799. The address was 7, rue du Coq-Saint-Honoré. Giroux was an art restorer. He also crafted cabinets. Notably, he served as one of the official restorers for Notre Dame Cathedral.

Initially, the business sold artist supplies. It also offered Giroux’s cabinetmaking creations. Soon, the business expanded. It moved into manufacturing and retailing luxury goods. Artwork became a specialty. This attracted French kings and royal family members.

In 1834, his sons André and Alphonse-Gustave joined the business. François-Simon-Alphonse Giroux retired in 1838. His eldest son, Alphonse-Gustave Giroux, took over. The business was renamed ‘Alphonse Giroux et Cie’. Under him, the business gained more acclaim. They won a silver medal at the 1839 Exposition des Produits de L’industrie Française.

Interestingly, Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre signed a contract with Alphonse-Gustave Giroux in 1839. Daguerre invented the Daguerrotype photographic process. Giroux, his brother-in-law, gained the exclusive right to manufacture and sell the camera.

In 1857, Maison Giroux relocated. The new address was 43 Boulevard des Capucines. The store extended to 24 Rue Neuve des Capucines. It became a dual-aspect department store.

Later, in 1867, Duvinage and Harinckouk took over the business. Maison Giroux continued its operations under new ownership. Later Ferdinand Duvinage became the sole proprietor of the business in 1874.

Ferdinand Duvinage introduced a new marquetry technique. It combined ivory, wood, and copper. He patented it in 1874. This technique adorned trays, jardinières, and table tops. The style was often Japonisme. It featured exotic birds and bamboo.

After Duvinage’s death, his widow Rosalie patented amendments in 1877. She included materials like mother-of-pearl. Objects with this marquetry were displayed at the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris. They bore the marks FD and Bte. Production lasted until 1882. Madame Duvinage ceded her directorship then.

Today, items with this technique can be seen in museums. The Detroit Institute of Arts holds one. The Musée des Arts Décoratifs also has an example. The Victoria and Albert Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art also boast pieces.

Rue Giroux, therefore, is more than just a street. It represents the legacy of Maison Alphonse Giroux. The Maison Alphonse Giroux represents artistry, innovation, and luxury. It is a testament to Parisian craftsmanship.
