Unusual it is that a street in Paris carries the name of Gaston Defferre. He was after all deeply connected to Marseille. Gaston Defferre a prominent figure in French politics significantly shaped the nation’s trajectory. Let me tell you more about him and why this street might bear his name.

Gaston Defferre was born in 1910. He died in 1986. He served as Marseille’s mayor for an impressive 33 years. His political career spanned several significant roles. He was a member of the National Assembly and the Senate. Defferre also held ministerial positions.

During World War II Defferre was part of the Brutus Network. This was a Resistance Socialist group. He co-founded Le Provençal a major centre-left newspaper. Later he acquired the right-wing daily Le Méridional. These newspapers made him a formidable political force.

Defferre’s political actions extended to overseas territories. As Overseas Minister he laid the groundwork for the end of French colonialism in sub-Saharan Africa. This was achieved through the Loi-cadre Defferre.

He faced strong opposition from the French Communist Party. He often relied on support from the non-Gaullist center-right. Defferre advocated for a national alliance between the SFIO and the Christian democratic Popular Republican Movement.

He participated in the last duel in France in 1967. This was after insulting René Ribière at the French parliament. Defferre yelled Shut up stupid at Ribière. Ribière demanded an apology but Defferre refused. Ribière lost the duel being wounded twice.

In 1969 Defferre ran for president. Pierre Mendès-France would have been Premier if Defferre had won. However he only scored 5% of the vote. This was the lowest ever for a French Socialist candidate.

Despite this Defferre helped François Mitterrand take the Socialist Party’s leadership in 1971. He served as Mitterrand’s interior minister from 1981 to 1984. He was the architect of the 1982 decentralization reforms.

Perhaps Rue Gaston Defferre honors his role in these decentralization efforts. These reforms impacted all of France including Paris. He also served as Minister for Town and Country Planning. This position allowed him to shape urban development policies. He held this position until his death.

Gaston Defferre’s life was marked by political ambition leadership and significant contributions to France. Remembering Gaston Defferre allows us to reflect on France’s complex political history. It also highlights the importance of local and national leadership.
