“Grand Balcon” rings a bell. It echoes through the decades on Rue Gagliardo. Let’s turn back the clock. We will uncover the story of this street in Marseille.

Rue Gagliardo is more than just a street. It’s a slice of Marseille history. It’s a place where the past whispers to the present.

In the 1950s, Rue Gagliardo saw the construction of the building “Grand Balcon”. Gabriel Ollive captured this moment in a photograph. The image shows the architectural progress. It freezes a moment in time. Ollive’s work gives us a glimpse into the past. It shows how Marseille evolved.

Marseille itself is a city steeped in history. Founded by Greek sailors around 600 BCE, it has been a port of call for ages. Greeks, Romans, traders and travelers have shaped its identity. Rue Gagliardo is a small part of this big story.

The city decided to create the immense thoroughfare, over 1.5 km in length in 1864. This project meant destroying 935 houses. It also meant the disappearance of almost 61 streets of Marseille. It took four years to complete this project from 1860 to 1864.

The street got its official name “Rue de la République” on October 16, 1870. It was called “rue Impériale” before that. The buildings here have a Haussmann style. This style was popular with the bourgeoisie. They preferred downtown districts though. They liked quartier Vauban or quartier des Antiquaires better. The Vieux-Port’s proximity wasn’t for everyone back then. Today it is different.

Since the 2000s, the street has been part of the Euro-Mediterranean perimeter. About 4,000 rental homes are to be renovated here. Multiple groups and franchises bought adjoining units in 2005. They wanted to renovate them. They wanted to make them more attractive. Today the street has grown a lot. There are boutiques, cafés, bars and restaurants.

Consider Notre-Dame de la Garde. It watches over the city. It’s a symbol of protection for sailors and fishermen. The basilica stands tall. It is a testament to Marseille’s faith.

Or consider Le Panier. It retains its historic charm. Narrow streets twist and turn. Colorful houses stand close together. Locals gather in small squares. They play pétanque and share gossip.

Marseille’s culinary scene is another highlight. Bouillabaisse is a famous dish. It began as a fisherman’s stew. Now, it is a gourmet delight.

Rue Gagliardo connects to this larger narrative. It embodies Marseille’s blend of old and new. The street saw changes. It saw construction. It saw the city evolve around it.

So, as you stand on Rue Gagliardo, think about its history. Think about the “Grand Balcon”. Think about Marseille’s long journey. Let the street tell you its stories.
