We stand now on Rue Fulgence Bienvenüe in Gennevilliers, a tribute to the visionary engineer who, ironically, focused his life’s work on what lay beneath the bustling streets of Paris. Fulgence Bienvenüe, born in 1852, wasn’t destined for a life above ground. He was the mind behind the Paris metro, earning him the title “Father of the Metro”. While he may not have designed streets like this one, his legacy is forever intertwined with the city’s infrastructure. Imagine the sheer audacity of his vision in the late 19th century. A network of tunnels, snaking beneath the city, transporting Parisians with a speed and efficiency never before imagined. Bienvenüe, despite losing his left arm in a railway accident, persevered, overseeing the construction of the first metro line which opened in 1900. Can you picture the awe of those first passengers, whisked away beneath the city streets? His work didn’t stop there. Over 30 years, he directed the construction of 115 km of metro lines, forever changing the Parisian landscape, even if unseen.
