Have you ever walked up a street that’s also a giant staircase? This is Rue Foyatier, a truly unusual street in Paris. It’s named after Denis Foyatier, a sculptor who lived in the 19th century. It’s one of the main thoroughfares leading up the Butte Montmartre, the big hill in the 18th arrondissement. There are 222 steps to climb to the top, a journey that takes you 36 meters higher. The climb is daunting, but you can also get to the top by funicular, a railway specifically designed for steep inclines. The funicular first opened in 1900. It was rebuilt in 1935 and again in 1991. Around two million people each year use this small train to ascend the hill. From the top of Rue Foyatier, you can see the Sacré-Cœur Basilica, a beautiful church that stands on the hilltop. If you’re in Paris, don’t miss a chance to walk up Rue Foyatier. You’ll be rewarded with a view of the Parisian skyline and a story to tell your friends back home.
