Could a street named after a sculptor whisper tales of artistic rebellion? Rue Falguière, a seemingly ordinary street in Paris’s 15th arrondissement, holds within its borders a legacy etched in paint, passion, and poverty. Rue Falguière wasn’t always a tribute to artistic endeavors. Before 1900, it was a humble path known as “Chemin des Fourneaux”, a nod to the brick factories lining its edges. However, the turn of the century brought a change. The street was christened Rue Falguière in honor of the celebrated sculptor Alexandre Falguière, whose residence, Villa Rose, graced a secluded corner that would later become Cité Falguière.

This small cul-de-sac, tucked away within Rue Falguière, became a haven for struggling artists in the early 20th century. Names like Amedeo Modigliani, Chaim Soutine, and Tsuguharu Foujita found solace and inspiration within the cramped, often dilapidated studios of Cité Falguière. Imagine Soutine, hunched over his canvas in his studio at number 11, the looming chimney of the Institut Pasteur visible through his window. This very building still stands today, bearing witness to Soutine’s artistic struggles and triumphs. It’s a poignant reminder of the area’s transformation from a hotbed of artistic expression to a more modern cityscape. Sadly, the march of time wasn’t kind to Cité Falguière.

The mid-20th century brought about a wave of urban renewal, replacing the artistic refuge with residential buildings. Only numbers 9 and 11 remain from those bohemian days, clinging to the echoes of a bygone era. As you stand on Rue Falguière today, the ghosts of artists past seem to brush against you. Their stories, immortalized in paint and whispered on the wind, remind us that even amidst the grandeur of Paris, it’s often in the quiet, unassuming corners that we find the most captivating stories.
