Is this just another street? No. This, my friends, is Rue Eugène Tartasse. A seemingly ordinary street named after an extraordinary man. Here in Paray-Vieille-Poste, Rue Eugène Tartasse stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Eugène Tartasse, a house painter by trade, was a man deeply embedded in his community. Elected as a communist councilman in 1935, he was a beacon of hope in turbulent times. Eugène served as the local secretary of the Secours Populaire, an organization dedicated to helping those in need. The chaos of World War II cast a dark shadow over Paray-Vieille-Poste. Eugène, along with the entire municipal council, was arrested on October 24th, 1940, by the French police under the orders of the Vichy regime. He was first interned at Aincourt camp, then transferred to the German-controlled Royallieu camp in Compiègne. Eugène Tartasse’s journey ended tragically in Auschwitz, where he perished on October 10th, 1942. His story serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of war and oppression. Rue Eugène Tartasse is not just an address. It is a memory. A tribute to a man who dedicated his life to serving his community and fighting for his ideals. As you walk along this street, remember Eugène Tartasse – the councilman, the painter, the hero. His legacy lives on, inscribed on the monument to the heroes of the Resistance in Paray-Vieille-Poste.
