Bet you didn’t know that a street in Paris commemorates a champion fencer. This is Rue Emmanuel Fairon. It is more than just a name on a street sign. It’s a tribute to a man of courage and conviction.

Emmanuel Fairon was born in Paris in 1901. He wasn’t born into privilege. His father was a carter. His mother was a laundress. Fairon worked hard. He was a bureau employee, a lithographer and a metalworker.

But Fairon was also a fighter. He excelled in fencing. He became the French FSGT fencing champion in 1936 and 1937.

Fairon’s life took a turn towards politics. He became a socialist municipal councillor in Bondy in 1935. He joined the clandestine Communist Party in 1941.

During World War II, Fairon resisted the Nazi occupation. He aided Henri Varagnat, a communist leader. Fairon devised an escape plan with Pierre George.

Tragically, Fairon was arrested in 1942 by the French police. He was imprisoned. Then he was executed as a hostage at Mont-Valérien in 1943. This was a reprisal for the assassination of Dr. Ritter.

Even in his final moments, Fairon left his mark. He left a graffiti with his name in the Chapelle des fusillés at Mont-Valérien. He stood alongside Louis Menotte and Roger Jarrige.

So, as you walk along Rue Emmanuel Fairon remember the man behind the name. Remember his courage, his commitment to justice and his ultimate sacrifice. This street serves as a reminder of the brave souls who fought for freedom during a dark chapter in history.
