Have you ever heard of a street named after a Dutch island? Rue du Texel, in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, is named after the island of Texel in the Netherlands. The island is significant to France for its role in two naval battles: the Battle of Texel in 1694 and the Battle of Den Helder in 1795. The street itself was once two separate streets: Rue du Moulin-de-Beurre and Rue Saint-Médard. After the annexation of Vaugirard to Paris in 1860, these streets were combined and renamed in 1877 to Rue du Texel. Today, the street is home to the headquarters of HADOPI, the organization tasked with enforcing the law that protects copyright on the internet. The street is a reminder of the complex history of Paris and its connections to other parts of Europe. It is a place where the past and present collide, a place where the stories of battles and the creation of law come together.
