“Who was the Reverend Father Corentin Cloarec?” I ask. We find ourselves on a street named in his honor. This is Rue du Révérend Père Cloarec. It is a testament to a life of faith and resistance.

Rue du Révérend Père Cloarec stands as a quiet reminder. It commemorates a man who lived during turbulent times. Corentin Cloarec was a French Franciscan priest. He was also a member of the French resistance during World War II.

Jean-Marie Cloarec was born in 1894. He hailed from Saint-Sauveur in Finistère. His family were farmers. He joined the seminary in Quimper. World War I interrupted his studies.

Cloarec joined the 118th Infantry Regiment. He fought in the Somme and Champagne. He was wounded and captured at Verdun. Cloarec was detained in a prisoner camp. There he continued his theological studies.

After the war, Jean-Marie Cloarec became Father Corentin. He took the name Corentin in honor of a Breton saint. He held various positions within the Franciscan order. He taught at a seminary. He also served as superior of friaries.

During the German occupation of France, Father Corentin became involved in the Resistance. He helped prisoners escape. He also assisted downed Allied airmen. His connections proved invaluable. He aided those fleeing to Spain.

The priest provided refuge for resistance members. The convent on Rue Marie-Rose became a safe haven. Important meetings were held there. These planned resistance efforts in Paris.

Betrayal led to Father Corentin’s assassination in 1944. Two Frenchmen working for the Gestapo murdered him. They shot him at the entrance to his convent. Mortally wounded he forgave his assassins.

News of his death spread quickly. Thousands came to the convent. They paid their respects to Père Corentin. Cardinal Suhard also visited.

The street we stand on was renamed in his honor in 1945. This was a decision made by the local liberation committee. It immortalized his contribution to France.

Father Corentin received posthumous honors. He was awarded the Medal of the French Resistance. He was also promoted to sergeant-chief. This recognized his bravery as a freedom fighter.
