“A bridge washed away by a flood? Right here on Rue du Pont Royal?” I ask, watching your faces. Rue du Pont Royal, as it stands today, whispers stories of resilience. Let’s journey back to a time before this elegant stone structure graced the Seine. Imagine a simple ferry, the lifeline between the banks. The Rue du Bac, across the river, owes its very name to this early ferry crossing. Then, in 1632, a wooden bridge emerged, financed by the enterprising Barbier and bearing his name. Pedestrians and horse riders paid a toll to traverse its length. It later became Pont Sainte-Anne, honoring the wife of Louis XVIII, Anne of Austria. Then, a coat of red paint christened it Pont Rouge. This fragile structure faced a series of misfortunes. Damaged by fire and water, it eventually succumbed to the Seine’s powerful currents, swept away by a flood. This prompted Louis XIV to commission a more permanent solution. A stone bridge, funded by the French Crown and designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, rose in its place. Upon its completion, it was christened Pont-Royal. The French Revolution saw it renamed Pont National. Napoleon, ever the pragmatist, considered calling it Pont des Tuileries, commemorating the cannons of the Tuileries Palace that aided his victory on October 5th, 1795. In 1814, with the restoration of the monarchy, Louis XVIII reinstated its original name, Pont-Royal, the name it proudly bears to this day. Look closely at the last stone of the bridge. Etched there are the heights of historic floods, a permanent reminder of the river’s power and the bridge’s enduring strength. Rue du Pont Royal and its bridge stand as testaments to the ebb and flow of Parisian history, a blend of destruction and rebirth.
