Did a street in Paris inspire arctic expeditions? No, quite the opposite! We’re standing before Rue du Pôle Nord, a street named in honor of a remarkable explorer, Gustave Lambert. Rue du Pôle Nord is nestled in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. This seemingly ordinary street holds a fascinating story, a tribute to a man who dared to dream of conquering the North Pole. In 1868, Gustave Lambert embarked on an ambitious expedition to reach the magnetic North Pole. He dedicated nearly twenty years of his life seeking funding and support for this perilous journey. He finally launched his expedition in 1865 from Brest. His ship managed to reach the northernmost point of the Bering Strait. However, insufficiently equipped for the harsh arctic conditions, the ship became trapped in the unforgiving ice. Lambert’s dream remained just beyond his reach. Undeterred by this setback, upon his return to Paris, Lambert began planning new expeditions. He collaborated with other navigators, shared his knowledge, and designed a better ship capable of withstanding the formidable ice barrier. Tragically, Lambert’s dream was never realized. He was killed in action during the Franco-Prussian War of 1871. His work, however, was instrumental in guiding future expeditions to the North Pole. Rue du Pôle Nord, established in 1884, serves as a lasting memorial to Gustave Lambert’s unwavering dedication. It reminds us of the courage and determination required to pursue even the most audacious dreams. This small street, just a hundred meters long, located between the Porte de Clignancourt and Porte de Saint-Ouen, carries the legacy of a man whose spirit of exploration continues to inspire.
