“A street paved with plaster?” you might ask, intrigued. Here on Rue du Plâtre, the very name whispers tales of a rich and layered past. Rue du Plâtre, formerly known as Rue du Saint-Esprit, stretches between Rue du Président-Édouard-Herriot and Rue Paul-Chenavard in Lyon’s 1st arrondissement. This seemingly ordinary street holds centuries of history, connecting us to the heart of old Lyon. The name “Plâtre,” meaning plaster, might evoke images of construction. However, its origins are far more intriguing. Historian Louis Maynard suggests the name recalls the “Place du Plâtre,” also called “Plâtre Saint-Esprit.” This place was named after the Saint-Esprit brotherhood. They owned a barn near a well, known as the “Puits de Malconseil,” or the “Well of Bad Advice.” Adding another layer to the story, some believe “plâtre” referred to a cemetery. This interpretation stems from the proximity of Saint-Nizier’s old cemetery. This cemetery was located around the apse of the Saint-Nizier Church. Rue du Plâtre’s history winds back to at least 1550 when it appeared on maps as “R[ue] du S[aint-]Esprit.” Today, Rue du Plâtre thrives with a mix of businesses. Fashion boutiques line the side near Rue Herriot, while jewelry shops sparkle towards Rue Chenavard. Bakeries, chocolate shops, and even a butcher add to the vibrant atmosphere. Rue du Plâtre is more than a street. It is a living testament to Lyon’s vibrant history. It is a place where whispers of the past mingle with the energy of the present.
