“The year is 1844.” We stand on the Rue du Moulin Sarrazin, a street that has seen its fair share of history. The name might conjure images of windmills, and you wouldn’t be entirely wrong. This street, established in 1624, owes its name to the mills that once stood on a small hill here. Today, the hill is gone, replaced by the bustling street before us. But in 1844, a different kind of energy filled the air. At number 32, which would be number 14 today, a revolution of words was brewing. This was the office of “Vorwärts!”, a fortnightly German-language newspaper. It might sound like just another paper, but “Vorwärts!” was a beacon for progressive thinkers, its pages filled with ideas that challenged the status quo. The newspaper had a relatively modest circulation of around 1,000 copies. But its impact was far-reaching, attracting the attention of a young Karl Marx, who became a major editor in the summer of 1844. Imagine the conversations, the debates, the clash of ideologies within those walls. The Rue du Moulin Sarrazin was their stage. It wasn’t all smooth sailing for “Vorwärts!”. In 1845, the newspaper was outlawed after publishing an article that dared to applaud an attack on the Prussian King. Censorship couldn’t silence the ideas that had taken root on this street. The Rue du Moulin Sarrazin stands as a testament to its revolutionary past, a reminder that even in the heart of Paris, words can spark change.
