Slipping through time, let’s journey back to wartime France. Picture a young man, Raoul Batany, his name now etched onto this very street, Rue du Lieutenant Raoul Batany. Rue du Lieutenant Raoul Batany in Clamart stands as a quiet testament to his bravery and the complexities of war. Born in 1926, Raoul’s life took a dramatic turn during World War II. He became a resistance fighter, working against the German occupation. He was part of the Combat movement and later became a regional secretary for the United Resistance Movement. He even led a Franc group within the Carnot Brigade. Rue du Lieutenant Raoul Batany reminds us of his dedication to freedom. Raoul’s resistance work was fraught with danger. He was constantly hunted by the Gestapo, forcing him to move to the Languedoc-Roussillon region. He was involved in helping people escape to Spain and organizing clandestine operations. One can almost feel the tension of those times while standing on Rue du Lieutenant Raoul Batany. Tragically, Raoul’s life was cut short. He was arrested and tortured by the Gestapo, then transferred to Montpellier. Just hours before the city’s liberation, he was executed by the Milice in the De Lauwe barracks. Rue du Lieutenant Raoul Batany serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the war. Despite the tragic circumstances of his death, Raoul’s courage was recognized posthumously. He was awarded the Resistance Medal and the Legion of Honour. He was also recognized as a member of the French Forces of the Interior (FFI) and given the rank of lieutenant. The phrase “Died for France” was officially attributed to him. Here on Rue du Lieutenant Raoul Batany, we honour his memory and the fight for liberty.
