The name Rue du Havre evokes a sense of adventure and distant shores. It wasn’t always known as Rue du Havre. Today it connects to the bustling Place du Havre in Paris, but before the 19th century, it was simply Rue de la Chaussée-d’Antin and later Rue Mirabeau le Patriote. In the 1830s, the railway network in France expanded, with a new terminal, later to become Gare Saint-Lazare, being built in Paris. With the opening of a new terminal in the heart of Paris, the street that lead to the station was deemed important enough to be renamed Rue du Havre. Why? Because this road was the gateway to the port of Le Havre! Passengers could arrive by train at Gare Saint-Lazare and then depart for Le Havre to get to the sea and continue their journeys by ship. The road was also a convenient link between the new railway terminal and the city’s central districts. Today, Rue du Havre still connects to the famous Gare Saint-Lazare, a train station that takes many passengers to the port of Le Havre in Normandy. If you take the time to look around, you might see a few people heading to a train station from a street that was named after their destination.
