Did you know that Rue du Dôme owes its name to a distant view? Once upon a time, one could see the dome of Les Invalides from here. Let’s step back in time and explore the stories woven into this Parisian street.

Rue du Dôme resides in the 16th arrondissement. It sits near the Place de l’Étoile. This street stretches just 105 meters connecting Rue Lauriston to Avenue Victor-Hugo. However, there’s a notable feature here. An abrupt change in elevation separates the two halves of Rue du Dôme.

The story of Rue du Dôme is tied to the development of Paris itself. The street’s unevenness comes from the excavation. Workers dug into the Butte de l’Étoile de Chaillot. This created space for Avenue Victor-Hugo.

Once part of the old commune of Passy, Rue du Dôme joined Paris. The street officially became part of Paris. Later, the city defined its boundaries through official decrees.

But Rue du Dôme holds more than just city planning history. It also has a connection to literary history. At number 1 Rue du Dôme, poet Charles Baudelaire spent his final days. Afflicted by aphasia and hemiplegia, Baudelaire returned from Belgium to Paris. Dr. Guillaume Émile Duval, a renowned psychiatrist, housed him in his health facility.

Baudelaire’s room was on the ground floor. It was in a pavilion at the back of the garden. The room was well-lit. It even featured two paintings by Édouard Manet. One painting was of Baudelaire’s mistress. He died there ravaged by syphilis.

A plaque now commemorates Baudelaire’s life. It honors the poet who once resided on Rue du Dôme.

Today, Rue du Dôme provides a slice of Parisian life. The Kléber metro station serves the street. You can reach it easily. The street offers a quiet escape from the city’s bustle.

As you stand here on Rue du Dôme, consider its layers. It is more than just a street. It is a testament to Parisian history. It reminds us of Haussmann’s urban planning. Rue du Dôme also echoes with the presence of Baudelaire. A poet whose words continue to resonate through time.
