This was during a time when opportunities for women were severely limited. Marseille’s medical school wasn’t fully established then. Students had to travel elsewhere to complete their doctorates. Dr Sedan completed hers in Montpellier in 1926. Her thesis focused on child welfare in Marseille. A prescient focus for a woman who would revolutionize it.
After the war she found Marseille’s health system severely lacking especially for the poor. She established an association of visiting nurses. These nurses provided crucial preventative care and education. This innovative approach was inspired by a similar successful program in Lyon. The nurses visited families at home. They monitored pregnancies and the health of children under six.
This network was incredibly organized. It included a precise system of information gathering and coordination. It anticipated the creation of social worker programs. In 1941 her efforts became a public service. Her work extended beyond the clinic. During World War II she played a vital role in the Sauvegarde de l’enfance. This protected children particularly from juvenile delinquency.
She also headed the children’s section of the Marseille Red Cross. She continued her clinical work alongside her husband Dr Jean Sedan. He was a renowned ophthalmologist. They even co-directed the ophthalmology department at Saint-Joseph hospital. Dr Simone Sedan’s legacy extends beyond healthcare. She was instrumental in creating Marseille’s first aerarium. This was a specialized facility dedicated to the rehabilitation of young children.
In recognition of her unparalleled contributions the city of Marseille renamed Rue Autiq to Rue du Docteur Simone Sedan. This street serves as a fitting tribute.
