In 1944, a whisper of freedom echoed through the halls of 56 Rue Franklin in Montreuil. This was the home and medical practice of Dr. Roger Brandon, the namesake of the Rue du Docteur Roger Brandon we stand before today. Rue du Docteur Roger Brandon isn’t just a street. It’s a testament to a man who risked everything for his city and his country. Born in Chartres in 1893, Dr. Brandon became more than a physician in Montreuil. He was a beacon of hope during the Nazi occupation. While treating his patients, he quietly fueled the spirit of resistance. He used his influence in sporting circles to spread his ideals. His home on Rue Franklin became a clandestine meeting place for the local branch of the Front National, a resistance organization. Rue du Docteur Roger Brandon commemorates his bravery. Dr. Brandon wasn’t content with just whispering dissent. He actively joined the Comité Médical de la Résistance. Starting in early 1944, he treated wounded members of the Maquis resistance groups from Seine-et-Marne. When the fight for liberation reached Montreuil, Dr. Brandon, alongside Dr. Maille, organized aid stations in Montreuil and Rosny. He treated the wounded, and even participated in the liberation of Montreuil’s town hall on August 18, 1944. Rue du Docteur Roger Brandon stands as a reminder of his selfless dedication. For his courageous acts, he was awarded the Legion of Honour, the Resistance Medal, the War Cross, and the Medal of Honor for Military Health Service. Rue du Docteur Roger Brandon honors a man who embodied the spirit of resistance.
