Did you know that the Hôtel Lambert once stood on the Île Saint-Louis? This magnificent mansion is inextricably linked to the Rue du Comte de Lambert. Its story is one of Parisian grandeur spanning centuries.

Commissioned in 1640 by Jean-Baptiste Lambert a financier its construction continued after his death in 1644 under his brother Nicolas. The architects and artists involved were Louis Le Vau and Charles Le Brun. These were prominent figures in the court of King Louis XIV. They would later collaborate on the Palace of Versailles. The Hôtel Lambert’s Galerie d’Hercule inspired Versailles’ Hall of Mirrors.

For three centuries before the Rothschilds acquired it the Hôtel Lambert hosted a remarkable cast of characters. The Marquise du Châtelet and Voltaire resided there. Claude Dupin and his wife Louise hosted salons frequented by Montesquieu and Marivaux. Exiled Polish Prince Czartoryski used it as the base for his political faction. He threw parties attended by Chopin Balzac Liszt and Delacroix.

After periods of neglect and use as apartments the Hôtel Lambert underwent several restorations. Alexis von Rosenberg Baron de Redé restored it impressively in the 1940s. He threw extravagant parties attracting movie stars artists and royalty. His efforts earned him the title of commandeur of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

In 1975 Baron and Baroness Guy and Marie-Hélène de Rothschild purchased the Hôtel Lambert. They restored it to its 17th-century splendor. Their work involved the legendary interior designer Renzo Mongiardino. The Rothschilds’ restoration transformed the mansion into an exquisite residence once more. It was filled with burgundy velvet champagne silk Old Masters and Boulle marquetry.

The Rothschilds held the Hôtel Lambert until 2007. They sold it to Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al Thani. He spent millions renovating it and filling it with period treasures. In 2022 Sotheby’s Paris auctioned off the colossal collection that had adorned the Hôtel Lambert. This gave the public a rare glimpse into this great Parisian house.

The Hôtel Lambert’s legacy extends far beyond its opulent interiors. It reflects the rich history of the Île Saint-Louis and its connection to the Rue du Comte de Lambert.
