What whispers of history echo down the Rue du Chapitre in Rennes? This street, nestled between Place du Calvaire and Rue de Montfort, holds centuries of stories. The Rue du Chapitre, formerly known as Rue du Four-du-Chapitre, gets its name from the Cathedral Chapter’s oven once located here. The street presents a captivating blend of architectural styles, showcasing centuries of design. A remarkable number of 17th-century half-timbered houses still grace the Rue du Chapitre. These structures miraculously survived the Great Fire of 1720. The owner of the Hôtel de l’Escu de Runefaut, at number 5, paid to have neighboring homes demolished. This act of foresight stopped the fire’s advance, preserving this historic street. Built around 1650, the Hôtel de l’Escu de Runefaut is a vibrant spectacle. Its red and yellow ochre façade reflects the 17th-century fashion. Within its courtyard, a beautiful wooden staircase with turned balusters awaits discovery. Restored in 1988, the building’s original geometric patterns were revived using excavated polychromy traces. The ground floor houses a charming restaurant, Le Petit Grenier. Other notable buildings line the Rue du Chapitre. The Hôtel de Talhouët at number 3, with its two half-timbered floors and long façade, dates back to the 18th century. Originally known as the Hôtel du Faouët, it later became the Hôtel de Villaudon. At number 6 stands the magnificent Hôtel de Blossac, once home to the province’s commander-in-chief. With a monumental entrance, this architectural marvel from the Age of Enlightenment sits on the former outbuildings of the Hôtel de Brie. Transformed into a residential building in the 19th century, it now serves as the headquarters of the Regional Department of Cultural Affairs. Number 8 houses the Hôtel de Brie, also known as Bois de la Motte, dating from 1624. Its pilastered façade is a fusion of Classical and Renaissance styles. At the corner of Rue de la Psalette and 22 Rue du Chapitre, another Renaissance gem can be found. This 16th-century parliamentarian’s house received an additional floor in the 18th century. A curious detail: one corner panel is crafted from granite to protect against damage from cartwheels. The Rue du Chapitre, a testament to time and resilience, invites you to stroll through its vibrant history.
