“Imagine being captured, the fear of not knowing what will happen.” Right here on Rue du Capitaine Deplanque, a tale of bravery and sacrifice unfolded during the tumultuous days of World War II. This street, named after Captain Roland Deplanque, a hero of the French Resistance, whispers his story. Roland Deplanque, born in 1911, was an industrialist leading a seemingly ordinary life until the Nazi occupation transformed him into a symbol of defiance. He joined the Lissac-Deplanque resistance group based in Maisons-Alfort, risking his life to fight for his country’s liberation. After the group’s founder, Commandant Maurice Lissac, was arrested by the Gestapo, Deplanque, despite the looming threat, bravely took command. On August 21, 1944, Deplanque and two comrades were apprehended at a German checkpoint. While his companions were released, Deplanque was tragically executed the following day near the Croix de Villeroy in the Forest of Sénart. Today, Rue du Capitaine Deplanque stands as a testament to his unwavering courage. It serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made during those dark days and the indomitable spirit of those who fought for freedom. His name, etched onto this street, echoes through time, ensuring that his bravery will never be forgotten.
