“A tapestry of history,” I murmur, “woven into the very fabric of this street.” We stand on Rue des Gobelins, a seemingly ordinary Parisian street, yet its name whispers tales of vibrant dyes and intricate artistry. Rue des Gobelins takes its name from the Gobelin family, dyers who established themselves here in the 15th century. Their legacy is intertwined with the renowned Manufacture des Gobelins, the royal tapestry factory. But our story begins even earlier, when Rue des Gobelins was known as Rue de Bièvre. The Bièvre River flowed openly here, its waters attracting tanners, dyers, and other trades. The river’s presence, while essential for their craft, also made it one of the stinkiest streets in Paris! Imagine the pungent aroma of dyes and tannins hanging heavy in the air. The Gobelins, originally from Reims, set up their dyeing workshop along the Bièvre, their scarlet reds gaining renown throughout Paris. Their success led to the area being dubbed “Moulin des Gobelins,” acknowledging the importance of their family. The street eventually adopted their name, forever linking the Gobelins to this vibrant corner of Paris. Look around you, can you picture the bustling activity of the dyers and tanners? Can you almost smell the pungent river? Today, the Bièvre is hidden beneath the cobblestones, buried in 1912. The street’s history doesn’t end with the Gobelins. At number 3 bis Rue des Gobelins, you’ll find the Hôtel Mascarini, birthplace of Frédéric Passy, Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Numbers 17-19 Rue des Gobelins are part of the Îlot de la Reine Blanche, or “Château de la Reine-Blanche.” This gothic-style complex is among the oldest in Paris, whispering tales of a time long past. Number 19 once housed a draper’s workshop, while number 17 was a tannery. The Renaissance house at number 19, built in the late 15th or early 16th century, features beautiful mullioned windows and a vaulted archway. Inside, a remarkable spiral staircase with a single-piece oak core winds its way through the building. Ancient wells and vaulted cellars lie beneath, echoes of centuries past. This house and the Château de la Reine-Blanche were once a single entity, transformed into cloth dyeing workshops by the Charpentier family after 1572. The house likely served as their residence, connected to the bustling workshops. Rue des Gobelins, a street whose name evokes images of magnificent tapestries, holds within its cobblestones a rich history. From the pungent waters of the Bièvre to the legacy of the Gobelin family, this street offers a glimpse into the heart of Parisian history.
