“Why ‘Rue des Glaieuls’?” you might ask. This street in the 20th arrondissement has a story rooted in the area’s green past. Rue des Glaieuls is a road in Paris. It is located in the 20th arrondissement. It’s a small street with a big history.

Rue des Glaieuls begins at Rue Charles-Cros. It ends at Place du Maquis-du-Vercors and Avenue de la Porte-des-Lilas. Its length is just 73 meters.

The name “Rue des Glaieuls” links to the area’s history. Glaieuls means gladiolus in French. The street’s name comes from its proximity to old parks. These parks belonged to the Château de Ménilmontant and the Bruyères. Rue des Glaieuls was near the edge of these two parks.

Originally, this street had a different name. It was called “chemin de la Zone.” This translates to “path of the Zone”. The street crossed the zone non aedificandi. This was a restricted area around the Thiers wall.

The street’s form changed over time. In 1969, the construction of the Boulevard Périphérique altered it. The Boulevard Périphérique is the ring road around Paris. This construction reduced the street’s size.

Later, in 1974, another section disappeared. This section was between Rue de Guébriant and the Boulevard Périphérique. This part was removed entirely.

So, as you walk along Rue des Glaieuls, remember its layered past. It evolved from a path by old estates to its current form. The name reminds us of the lost greenery of old Paris. It is a small street with a surprisingly rich history. It whispers stories of parks and fortifications. Take a moment to imagine the fields and flowers that once defined this area.
