“A final letter penned in the shadow of the guillotine…” We stand before Rue des Fusillés, a name that whispers of sacrifice and resistance. Rue des Fusillés, a seemingly ordinary street, holds an extraordinary story from World War II. It commemorates the 22 members of the Manouchian Group, résistants who fought bravely against Nazi occupation. These heroes, many of whom were immigrants and Jews, carried out daring attacks against German forces in Paris. Their leader, Missak Manouchian, a poet turned resistance fighter, inspired his group with courage and determination. Rue des Fusillés takes its name from their tragic fate. On February 21, 1944, they were executed by the Nazis at Mont Valérien. Olga Bancic, their comrade, was later beheaded. The Nazis, attempting to use their deaths for propaganda, created the “Affiche Rouge” (Red Poster). It highlighted their foreign origins, aiming to portray them as criminals. However, it backfired. The faces on the poster became symbols of defiance against fascism. The people of Paris saw not criminals, but heroes. They adorned the posters with flowers and messages of respect. Rue des Fusillés, a poignant reminder of their bravery. It stands as a testament to the diverse group of individuals who gave their lives for the liberation of France. Their memory lives on, not just in this street name but also in other memorials across Paris.
