“A cow on Rue des Bouviers?” a child giggled, pointing down the Parisian street. “Imagine that!” Rue des Bouviers, the “Street of Cowherds,” might conjure images of rural pastures. But this Paris street, nestled in the 11th arrondissement, offers a different kind of charm. Rue des Bouviers begins its journey at 45, Rue des Boulets and concludes at 38, Rue Chanzy. It’s a relatively short street, only 246 meters long, but its history is richer than its size suggests. The street’s name, bestowed in 1994, pays homage to a former local landowner. Before its official naming, parts of the street existed as the “Impasse du Prince-Eugène,” later known as “Impasse Bouvier.” Another section was simply the provisional “voie AE/11.” This evolution from unnamed pathway to recognized street reflects the ever-changing urban landscape of Paris. Today, the street boasts some contemporary art. Along a wall on Rue Bouvier, a large mural stretches, showcasing a whimsical scene. An angel, adorned with a fish as a hat, stands out amongst other artistic contributions. This blend of old and new, of history and modern expression, defines the character of Rue des Bouviers. The street houses the Collège Pilâtre de Roziers, adding a youthful energy to the area. As you walk along Rue des Bouviers, imagine the cowherds of old, their lives a stark contrast to the vibrant Parisian scene that thrives here today. This quiet street offers a brief respite from the bustling city, a place to reflect on the layers of history beneath your feet.
