Picture this Rue Delaborde a street in Neuilly-sur-Seine. It’s not what you’d expect from a street housing some of France’s wealthiest families. Liliane Bettencourt lived here. So did Martin Bouygues and Andre Courreges. The houses are luxurious yes but not ostentatious. Some are even a little run down. A street cleaner once called it the ugliest street in the neighborhood. He wasn’t entirely wrong.

Rue Delaborde isn’t flashy. It’s discreet. That’s the point. The street’s charm lies in its quiet elegance. It’s a place where wealth lives subtly. Not in gaudy displays but in the understated luxury of the houses themselves. The street feels private. It’s almost hidden. Private gates and security cameras keep intruders out.

Interestingly Liliane Bettencourt and her daughter Francoise Meyers lived just a hundred meters apart. Imagine their family dynamics. Their very different lifestyles are hidden behind these unassuming walls. Across from Liliane’s house lived Martin Bouygues. The retired fashion designer Andre Courreges also resided here. Even a diplomat from Africa lived on this street.

The street has a diverse population. Many are the domestic staff working for the wealthy residents. Filipinos and Portuguese are common sights. In the summer months when the wealthy owners are away the street is filled with the sounds of their domestic staff’s lives. It is during those times the real pulse of Rue Delaborde is felt.

Mr Da Silva the Portuguese street cleaner lived in the building where Maurice Herzog the former minister resided. He even saw Liliane Bettencourt herself surrounded by bodyguards. But he didn’t know her personally. He knew of the residents but did not know them personally. There was a sense of community. Residents looked out for each other. They communicated when something happened. This solidarity was unexpected in such an exclusive location.

But not everyone felt this connection. Some residents felt separated. They knew the Bettencourts. The Bettencourts didn’t know them. Class divisions remained. The idea that all residents shared a common experience was an illusion.

Rue Delaborde is more than just addresses. It is a complex microcosm of wealth. It is a place where luxury and privacy intertwine. It is a street where seemingly mundane encounters mask exceptional lives. It’s a place of contrasts. A mix of quiet grandeur and everyday life. A reminder that even in the wealthiest of neighborhoods life continues with its own rhythms. A story whispered on the breeze. A story etched in the stone. A story only Rue Delaborde can tell.
