Hidden among Lyon’s charming streets lies Rue de Provence. A small unassuming street it holds a significant place in Lyon’s history. Rue de Provence forms part of the Soufflot quarter. This area was developed in the mid-18th century under the direction of the architect Soufflot. The street originally extended further north. However its northern section was demolished in the mid-20th century. This was to make way for the construction of a major roadway connecting a bridge to the Croix-Rousse tunnel. This reflects the city’s evolving relationship with automobile traffic. Rue de Provence’s name however is not linked to this. Instead it was named during Louis XV’s reign. All streets in the area were named after members of the royal family. His grandson the Comte de Provence later became Louis XVIII. The revolutionary period saw many street names changed. Rue de Provence though retained its name albeit shortened. A significant portion of the street was lost to the creation of Place Servet. This square was named in honor of a 16th-century heretic. The remaining Rue de Provence today is a quiet reminder of a bygone era. It stands as a testament to the enduring charm of Lyon’s historical fabric. Its architecture though shows the changes over time. The main entrance is majestic yet bears the marks of time. Tags mar its once beautiful facade. It still boasts a beautiful door knocker. Beyond the entrance lie two impressive lions in the alleyway. A pedestrian underpass links Rue de Provence to the sidewalk of the Pont de Lattre de Tassigny. This hidden passage adds to the street’s unique character. Despite its small size Rue de Provence whispers tales of Lyon’s rich past. The street’s quiet beauty offers a glimpse into Lyon’s evolution. It reminds us of the layers of history that shape the city. Rue de Provence a small street. A big story.
