Did you know that Rue de l’Espérance translates to “Street of Hope”? It is a fitting name for a street with a history rooted in Lyon’s industrious past. This street offers a glimpse into the city’s architectural evolution.

Rue de l’Espérance begins as an extension of Rue Edouard Aynard in Villeurbanne. It ends near 343 Rue Paul Bert close to Place des Maisons Neuves. Cars typically travel south on it. The street showcases a variety of buildings from different periods of the 20th century.

On the west side of Rue de l’Espérance, the first building is relatively new. It features a symmetrical design around a porch. This building occupies the entire block between Impasse Aynard and Rue Sainte Anne. The second building is more imposing with its eight stories. It stretches to Rue Charial behind small trees. The buildings on the opposite side are simpler. Number 7 stands out with its 1950s style. It is distinguished by its overhanging curve and porthole-like windows.

The final section of Rue de l’Espérance is lower and older. Here you will find concrete workshops, small buildings and houses. The house at number 25 is covered in virgin vines. Number 22 is particularly charming. It features a beautiful double window with moldings. It is set back above a porch creating a tiny courtyard.

The Villeurbanne side of Rue de l’Espérance is lush with two rows of plane trees. They overlook the leafy roundabout of Place Arago. Rue de l’Espérance was opened in the second half of the 19th century.

The building at the corner of Rue Voltaire and Rue de la Part Dieu was built by the cooperative “l’Espérance”. It was intended for the plastering and painting section. The exact address of this cooperative is not known. The name likely represents a more general sense of hope.

Today, the building at number 20 houses technical services for the Ministry of the Interior. Entrance is gained via Rue Paul Bert. This street is a blend of architectural styles and historical purposes. Rue de l’Espérance embodies the spirit of its name. It connects Lyon’s past with its present.
