Slipping through time’s corridors, we find ourselves on Rue de l’Audience in Fontenay-sous-Bois. It’s a far cry from the grandeur of Rue de Rivoli in Paris. Rue de Rivoli, a street echoing with Napoleonic ambition. Let’s journey there for a moment. Imagine the year 1801. First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte, haunted by the echoes of the 13 Vendémiaire uprising at Saint-Roch church, decrees a triumphal route through Paris. Rue de Rivoli, named for a glorious Italian victory, was to be that route. By 1803, it stretched from Place de la Concorde, a path paved for his coronation in 1804. Architects Percier and Fontaine designed elegant arcaded buildings. These arcades, a novelty since Place des Vosges, were intended for fashionable Parisians. Napoleon envisioned a promenade of prestige. Decrees banned unsightly shops and signage. Butchers, bakers, and metalworkers were kept at bay. This exclusivity initially deterred buyers. In 1811, Napoleon offered tax exemptions to lure investors. While the full glory of Rue de Rivoli unfolded after his reign, its genesis lies in his vision. Now, back to the present, and to the quieter Rue de l’Audience. Its story may be less grand, yet every street whispers its own tale.
