Picture this. You are standing before Rue de Lallier in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. This unassuming street holds a surprisingly dramatic history. Its name Rue de Lallier honors Michel de Lallier or Michel de Laillier. He was a pivotal figure in 15th-century Paris. A prevost des marchands a powerful merchant official. He lived during a tumultuous time. The English occupied Paris.

De Lallier initially collaborated with the Burgundians and the English. His two brothers however remained loyal to the Armagnacs and the future Charles VII. This family split wasn’t unusual. Many Parisian families chose sides to protect their assets during this conflict.

However de Lallier’s allegiance shifted. He became a leader of the French faction in the English-occupied city. In April 1436 he ignited a popular uprising. This bold move coincided with Charles VII’s army amassing at Paris’ gates. The English retreated. They were allowed to leave for Rouen on April 15 1436. Paris was liberated albeit battered and bruised.

De Lallier’s role in the liberation was significant. He succeeded Hugues Lecoq as prevost des marchands. He held the position until 1438. His story is rarely told. Yet it’s a powerful reminder of the complex choices and dramatic events that shaped Paris. Even seemingly quiet Parisian streets like Rue de Lallier can whisper tales of courage rebellion and unexpected shifts of power. The statue of him at the Hotel de Ville is a testament to this extraordinary man. A man whose actions had a monumental impact on the fate of Paris. A man mostly forgotten but never erased from the fabric of this city.
