Have you ever walked down a street that seemed to whisper secrets? And the trees that stood sentinel along its path, they seemed to hold the weight of history, their branches reaching towards the sky where Parisian skies once stretched wide open. Welcome to Rue de la Voie Verte, a street that once knew only nature’s bounty. Rue de la Voie Verte, meaning ‘Street of the Green Way,’ was once a country lane leading out of the small town of Montrouge. The path that lined it was once a vibrant green lane, carpeted with grass and lined by trees. It was a world away from the bustling streets of Paris. This street, however, was destined for something more. In the late 19th century, Paris’s borders expanded, and what was once a rural path became part of the city’s urban fabric. The trees were cleared, and the land was paved. But a trace of its past lingered in its name. Rue de la Voie Verte. This historic path was renamed ‘Rue du Père-Corentin’ to honor a courageous Franciscan priest who was tragically killed by Nazi forces during World War II. The priest, Father Corentin Cloarec, was a member of the Resistance. He was a man of great faith, and he risked his life to help others. As you walk along Rue de la Voie Verte, you can almost feel the footsteps of history. The ground under your feet is the same ground that, centuries ago, was covered in lush greenery. On the north side of the street, you’ll notice a 19th-century building that was once the home of Martin Nadaud, a skilled mason and politician. His book, “Memories of Leonard, Former Mason’s Boy,” still speaks to an ambitious time for this humble road. On the opposite side of the street stands the Couvent Saint-François, a reminder of the faith that once guided the lives of this community.
