Tucked away in Marseille’s 4th arrondissement is Rue de la Chartreuse. It whispers tales of a bygone era. Rue de la Chartreuse owes its name to the Carthusian monks who once called this area home. Their monastery, established in 1633, left an indelible mark on the landscape. The monks chose this location, close to the city yet tranquil. They also had access to irrigable land from the Jarret stream. This area later became known as the Grand Domaine des Chartreux. While the monastery itself is gone, the Église des Chartreux remains. This church, initially the monastery’s chapel, stands as a testament to the monks’ presence. The first stone was laid in 1633. The church itself was completed in 1684 and consecrated in 1702. It survived the French Revolution and became the parish church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine. Rue de la Chartreuse is more than just a street. It represents a historical footprint, a connection to Marseille’s rich past. As you stroll along Rue de la Chartreuse, imagine the Carthusian monks tending their gardens. Picture them moving through the cloisters and working the mills, both wind and water-powered, all part of the original monastic complex. These lands, once a place of quiet contemplation, are now woven into the fabric of bustling Marseille. The monks’ legacy lives on, whispering through the very stones of Rue de la Chartreuse.
