Can you believe that a street can be named after a renowned botanist? You are standing right in front of Rue de Candolle, a quiet street in the 5th arrondissement of Paris. Rue de Candolle is named after the Swiss botanist Augustin Pyrame de Candolle, who lived from 1778 to 1841. He was known for his work on plant classification. This street is only 37 meters long and 12 meters wide, making it a tiny, yet, significant lane located close to the Jardin des Plantes. The Jardin des Plantes is a famous botanical garden in Paris, and it is no surprise that it houses several plants that were classified by de Candolle. The street was opened along with the Rue Monge back in 1859. It wasn’t until ten years later, in 1869, that the street was finally given the name we know it by today. Rue de Candolle is a nice, short, walk. If you are in the area, you should take a moment to admire the quiet alley and appreciate its history.
