In the elegant 8th arrondissement of Paris, Rue de Berri whispers stories of centuries past. Rue de Berri wasn’t always the bustling business hub you see today. Imagine a time before the grand avenues and imposing buildings, when Rue de Berri was a tranquil village, nestled amidst swamps and forests. This area, known as the Roule, was a world away from the Parisian bustle. From 1640, this very spot held the Royal Nursery. It supplied the King’s residences with vibrant blooms and lush greenery. Imagine the vibrant colors and sweet scents that must have filled the air. Under the Regency, the Currency Director, Regnard, envisioned a grand housing project here. However, this dream never materialized, leaving Rue de Berri open for its next chapter. In 1755, the land was acquired by the Comte de Saint-Florentin, who gifted it to his mistress, the Comtesse de Langeac. She, in turn, sold it to the Comte d’Artois, Louis XVI’s younger brother, in 1772. His vision transformed the area, paving the way for new streets like Rue de Ponthieu and Rue d’Angoulême. Rue de Berri itself emerged from a humble path known as Ruelle de Chaillot, later Ruelle de l’Oratoire. It was eventually widened, paved, and renamed Rue de la Fraternité in 1848. Finally, in 1864, Rue de Berri reached its current form, extending to Boulevard Haussmann. Now, Rue de Berri stands as a testament to its rich past, a blend of history and modernity. The magnificent Hôtel Cornudet des Chaumettes still stands proudly on Rue de Berri. It serves as a reminder of the street’s noble heritage. From royal gardens to a thriving business district, Rue de Berri has witnessed centuries of transformation. It continues to captivate with its unique charm.
