“Rue Balagny” a Parisian whisper echoes through time. This unassuming street in the 17th arrondissement holds a secret. It’s a story of transformation and remembrance. Initially known as the “Chemin des Boeufs” the path of the oxen. It linked La Chapelle to Clichy. Its route wound through Montmartre and Batignolles-Monceau.

The construction of Thiers’s wall disrupted its flow. A new street was born officially in 1846. It was part of Batignolles-Monceau. Then in 1860 it became part of Paris. It was named “Rue Balagny” honoring Auguste Balagny. He was the first mayor of the 17th arrondissement.

Balagny a visionary leader oversaw the area’s transition from countryside to city. He was nicknamed “the Haussmann of Batignolles”. Many streets were paved under his guidance. He transformed the Théâtre des Batignolles into the Théâtre des Arts. This later became the Théâtre Hébertot. Balagny’s legacy is etched into the very fabric of this neighborhood.

Number 65 Rue Balagny once housed a Moynat trunk factory. Today only an apartment building remains. A nearby private road leads to the Cité des Fleurs. It’s a hidden gem a peaceful escape from the Parisian bustle. Rue Balagny’s past speaks of bustling industry and quiet charm.

In 1945 Rue Balagny was renamed Rue Guy-Môquet. It commemorates a young student Guy Môquet. He was executed by the Germans during World War II. He resided nearby. The renaming reflects a city’s evolving identity a remembrance of sacrifice amidst urban growth.

Walk along Rue Balagny. Feel the echoes of the oxen’s path. Imagine the bustling factory. Sense the quiet dignity of its current residents. This street is more than just a road. It’s a living testament to the history of Paris itself. Its name a poignant reminder of its past. Its present a serene continuation of the Parisian narrative.
