Did Alexandre Dareau, the mayor of Montrouge from 1852 to 1858, ever imagine his name gracing a street in Paris? Here we stand on Rue Dareau, a seemingly ordinary street in the 14th arrondissement’s Parc-de-Montsouris district. Rue Dareau’s history, however, is more intriguing than its present appearance might suggest. Before it bore its current name, Rue Dareau was known as “Passage des Jardins” within the Petit-Montrouge territory. This area was originally part of the commune of Montrouge, a separate entity from Paris. In 1863, Petit-Montrouge was incorporated into the city of Paris, and Passage des Jardins officially became Rue Dareau. This change occurred through a decree specifically naming the street after Alexandre Dareau, recognizing his service as mayor of the neighboring Montrouge. Today, Rue Dareau is a vibrant street, reflecting the diverse architectural styles of the 14th arrondissement. It is also home to the “La Sirène” Pavilion. This cultural facility houses the La Sirène de Paris association, one of the oldest independent amateur harmony orchestras in the capital. Established in 1874, the orchestra found its home on Rue Dareau, enriching the street’s cultural landscape. The modern building housing La Sirène is a testament to the street’s continuous evolution, seamlessly blending the old and the new. Rue Dareau isn’t just a street. It’s a testament to the changing boundaries of Paris, a reflection of the city’s growth and absorption of its surrounding communities. As you walk along Rue Dareau, remember the legacy of Alexandre Dareau. Consider the musical echoes of La Sirène, adding another layer to the street’s rich tapestry.
