Why is this street named Chevalier? Let’s uncover the story of Rue Chevalier. It begins on Rue Bellevue. It ends near the entrance of the eastern hospital group on Boulevard Pinel.

Rue Chevalier’s story is intertwined with the lives of several notable Chevaliers. It is important not to confuse it with Rue Henri Chevalier in Croix Rousse. Also differentiate it from Rue Gabriel and Jean Chevallier.

Our Chevalier owned land on this very street. Georges Chevalier died for his country on July 21 1918. Ulysse Chevalier born in 1841 died in 1923. He was a historian and a member of the Lyon Academy. He published a directory of historical sources from the Middle Ages. Also the Monplaisir cycling grand prix is named in memory of Jacques Chevalier.

Rue Chevalier has a short eastern side. This forms part of a small triangle. The other two sides are Rue Bellevue and Boulevard Pinel. A house sits at the corner of Rue Bellevue. You can see two gardens. There’s a pink house with a chalet extension. A modern house stands at the acute angle with Boulevard Pinel. It features oblique shapes on cube-like forms.

On the western side a wall connects individual houses. The first houses are set back from the street. Number 6 is covered in wood. Number 10 has a lovely entrance. It is adorned with ceramics.

Rue Chevalier was opened around the start of the 20th century. It’s a relatively recent addition to Lyon’s streetscape. Imagine this area a little over a century ago. It was likely open land gradually transforming into the residential area we see today.

As you walk along Rue Chevalier consider the people who have shaped it. From landowners to war heroes and scholars each has left their mark. The street stands as a testament to Lyon’s evolving history. It reflects the blend of residential life and historical significance.
