The family’s patriarch Felix Noellat established the Domaine in Vosne-Romanée in the 19th century. He had two sons Charles and Ernest.
Charles born in 1868 inherited his father’s passion. He and his wife Laure started with a small vineyard. They expanded it significantly. The First World War interrupted their work. Laure bravely managed the estate while Charles served. She showed remarkable business acumen. She acquired more land. By the 1930s the estate had grown to 25 hectares.
Their vineyard produced exceptional wines. The wines came from some of Vosne-Romanée’s finest appellations. These included the prestigious Romanée-Saint-Vivant. The Noellats were pioneers. They were among the first to bottle their wines directly at the estate. This was unusual at the time. Most wines were sold in barrels to négociants.
Charles and Laure had three children Felix André and Geneviève. Sadly Charles died in 1939 followed by André in 1941. Laure and Geneviève persevered. They worked tirelessly to maintain the family’s legacy. Geneviève’s husband Christian Moreau joined the business in 1947. He contributed greatly to the estate’s continued success.
Unfortunately family disputes arose after Geneviève’s death in 1987. Parts of the vineyard were divided. Much of it was sold to Lalou Bize Leroy in 1988. She is renowned for her high standards. This marks a chapter in the family’s story. A chapter of division and change.
Yet the spirit of Charles Noellat lives on. His great-grandson Stéphane and Antoine revived the Maison Charles Noellat in 2013. They offer a range of wines.
