Let’s take a walk down Rue Capitaine Jean Glarner. It’s more than just a street. It is a place where the past whispers to the present. It’s a place where the echoes of bravery resonate among the buildings.

The street is named for Capitaine Jean Louis Lazare Glarner. He was an artillery captain who was executed in 1944. He was a man of immense bravery during a dark period in French history.

Glarner’s story is one of defiance against Nazi occupation. On August 20 1944 Glarner was tasked with arresting Gustave Lesesne. German soldiers intercepted his vehicle. He was immediately killed.

His sacrifice was not forgotten. He was first buried in the Parisian cemetery of Saint-Ouen. Later he was reinterred in Marseille. This act ensured he would forever rest in the city he loved.

The street’s renaming was not just a symbolic gesture. It served as a statement of resistance. The Local Liberation Committee and the municipality chose to honor Glarner. It was done by renaming Avenue de la Gare on October 12 1944. It had been called Avenue du Maréchal-Pétain during the war.
