Might the name Rue Camille du Gast conjure images of daring feats and societal defiance? This street honors Marie Marthe Camille Desinge du Gast. She was a woman who shattered expectations in early 20th-century France.

Rue Camille du Gast stands as a reminder of a life lived on one’s own terms. Camille du Gast was born into a wealthy Parisian family in 1868. She defied the conventions of her time.

Camille du Gast’s story is one of adventure and determination. She excelled as a sportswoman. She was a skilled fencer, skier, and sharpshooter.

Du Gast’s adventures extended beyond traditional sports. She fearlessly jumped from a hot air balloon with a parachute in 1895. This act alone demonstrated her audacity.

After being widowed she pursued her passion for cars. She became one of the first women to obtain a driver’s license. By 1904, she was the first and only woman official for the Automobile Club de France.

The Rue Camille du Gast subtly echoes her entry into the Paris-Berlin race in 1901. Despite starting last out of 122 entrants, she finished 33rd overall.

In 1903, she drove a 5.7 works 30hp De Dietrich in the Paris-Madrid race. She stopped to aid a fellow driver who had crashed. She potentially saved his life.

The French government later barred women from competing in motorsport. Camille then turned her attention to boat racing.

Her life took a dramatic turn in 1910. She survived an assassination attempt instigated by her own daughter. Following this trauma, she devoted herself to animal welfare.

The modern Rue Camille du Gast now stands where the municipality of Paris honored her in 1929 by renaming rue Crespin. She attended the ceremony herself. This renaming acknowledged her remarkable life.

So as you stroll along Rue Camille du Gast remember the indomitable spirit of Camille du Gast. She was a woman who dared to challenge conventions. She lived a life full of adventure. She left an enduring legacy of courage and compassion.
