Imagine stepping back in time as we stand here on Rue Basfroi. This street whispers tales of old Paris. It’s a place where history and daily life intertwine.

Rue Basfroi is located in Paris’s 11th arrondissement. This street has a rich history dating back centuries. Its name comes from an old place called Basfer or Baffer. The name “Basfroi” might come from the Latin word for a tower or belfry.

In 1393, this area was known as a path through vineyards. By 1540, Rue Basfroi became part of a route connecting the Temple district to the Saint-Antoine Abbey. The street even appears on a map from 1672.

Let’s turn our attention to Number 22. This building also called Maison Basfroi. It stands as a remarkable example of early 17th-century architecture. Built in 1608, during the reign of Henri IV, it showcases the popular building styles of that era. Inside, you’ll find a wooden staircase from the 17th century. A well is located in the cellar, and original woodwork remains. In 2006, the city decided to save Maison Basfroi from demolition. A committee formed to protect this historic house. After years of effort, the renovation was finished in early 2016.

Rue Basfroi was once home to the Massif Central. This was a popular dance hall and cabaret after World War II. The orchestra played in the middle of the dance floor.

Today, Rue Basfroi has a blend of old and new. The Atelier Basfroi is located at number 23. In the 1980s, it was designed as the Mostini-Bastille gallery by the Mostini architectural firm. Since 2012, the space has been used for events. It now serves as a modern space for businesses to create content. The Atelier Basfroi hosts various events like press days, product launches, and fashion week showrooms.

As we continue our walk, consider how Rue Basfroi has evolved. From vineyards to a vital thoroughfare. From a place of popular entertainment to a place of architectural preservation. Rue Basfroi tells a story of Paris. It shows the city’s ability to preserve its past. The street also embraces new ideas.
