Lost in the 11th arrondissement’s maze? Let me guide you down Rue Auguste Laurent. This unassuming Parisian street holds a fascinating history. Named after the renowned 19th-century chemist Auguste Laurent its story intertwines with the evolution of Paris itself.

Before it was Rue Auguste Laurent this area was part of the much larger Rue de la Roquette. Imagine the bustling activity of a pre-19th century street. A different Paris entirely. This street’s path existed even earlier. Maps from 1672 already show its existence.

However our Rue Auguste Laurent wasn’t always so straightforward. For a long time it weaved around the Convent of the Hospitalières de la Roquette. This convent which stood until 1818 created a triple bend in the street. This bend was known as Rue des Murs-de-la-Roquette. It ended in the 18th century at the Rue des Amandiers.

This convoluted past gave the street its unique character. Today Rue Auguste Laurent is a straight street a testament to urban planning’s transformative power. It begins at 1 rue Mercœur and ends at 140 rue de la Roquette. It is just 15 meters wide. Its length is 150 meters.

Its current name was only adopted in 1904. This relatively recent designation reflects the city’s ongoing effort to honor its scientific heroes. The street’s quiet elegance belies its rich history. It whispers tales of convents chemists and the ever-changing face of Paris. So next time you stroll this unassuming street remember its complicated past. Remember the chemist Auguste Laurent. Remember the convent. Remember the meandering path. Rue Auguste Laurent is more than just a street. It is a living history lesson.
