Hidden within the 12th arrondissement, Rue Anna Jaclard whispers tales of a remarkable woman. Rue Anna Jaclard, named for the Russian revolutionary and feminist, is a relatively recent addition to the Parisian landscape. Born Anna Korvine-Kroukovskaïa in 1843, her life intertwined with literary giants and revolutionary figures. She corresponded with Dostoevsky, even rejecting his marriage proposal. She chose instead a life dedicated to social justice. Rue Anna Jaclard honors her contributions to the Paris Commune. She served on the Vigilance Committee of the 18th arrondissement. She also worked alongside André Léo to establish the newspaper “La Sociale.” Anna, a strong advocate for women’s education, also served on the commission overseeing girls’ schools during the Commune. After the Commune’s fall, she was condemned to forced labor. However, she escaped to Switzerland and later Russia. She eventually returned to Paris after an amnesty. Rue Anna Jaclard stands as a testament to her unwavering spirit and commitment to social change, a hidden gem in the heart of Paris.
