“A street once named for a young man who dared to speak out against tyranny…” This is Rue André Sigonney, a quiet street in the heart of Drancy. Its simple name holds a story of courage during the darkest days of World War II. André Sigonney was a young mechanic. He was a member of the French Communist Party and a passionate believer in liberty. In 1941, the Nazis occupied France. Fear filled the hearts of many, but André refused to be silent. One day, he attended a demonstration, protesting the Nazi occupation. Sadly, the demonstration was broken up, and he was arrested.

He was accused of aiding the enemy. André was imprisoned and brought before a court of Nazi officials. The Nazi officials found him guilty and sentenced him to death. André Sigonney was executed on February 26, 1941. He was only 21 years old. This street was named in his honor after the war to remember him. Standing before this simple street, we’re reminded of the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of fear. André Sigonney’s story reminds us that freedom is not free. His bravery was a beacon of hope for a nation that faced unimaginable oppression.
